What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of certain health conditions that may lead to serious health issues such as cardiovascular issues and hepatic steatosis. A person is diagnosed with the disease when he has three or more of the following conditions:
• Diabetes (high blood glucose)
• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Low levels of HDL cholesterol
• High triglycerides

Causes of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome affects nearly half of adults over the age of 50, occurring more in overweight and physically inactive people. The more accentuated the obesity, the greater the chances of developing health conditions that may lead to metabolic syndrome.

Obesity is caused by an overconsumption of calories as compared to the calories expended. This imbalance has been increasingly facilitated by global unhealthy dietary and lifestyle trends:
• High Calorie Diets
• Sedentary Lifestyles
• Hereditary Predisposition

A study by WHO in 2019 showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents aged 5-19 has risen from 4% in 1975 to over 18% in 2016. Proportionally related to the increasing childhood obesity, metabolic syndrome cases are also expected to increase in the coming years.

Preventing or Reversing Metabolic Syndrome

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and keeping tight track of blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels are a must to reduce the risk of the disease developing into more serious conditions. In order to prevent or reverse metabolic syndrome, some of the recommended lifestyle habits include:

• Keeping track of blood glucose and blood pressure levels
• Controlling weight
• Exercising regularly
• Keeping a healthy and balanced diet
• Reduce alcohol intake and not smoking
